Artemis Fowl is Science Fantasy written by Irish writer Eoin Colfer. It has a huge fan following among children. The movie was released directly on OTT (Disney+, Hotstar Disney+ in India — Premium membership is required for watching the film) on June 12, 2020.

Artemis Fowl is a 12 year old criminal mastermind who does not give any regard to his peers. He only considers the minds of Einstein, Hawking etc as worthy. His father is into the business of art collection. He goes missing one day and the news pops up that he is a thief involved in stealing multiple artworks around the world. He is now left with his guard Domovoi Butler. Further exploration of his father’s artifacts reveals that fairies and magic do exist and they have a hand behind his father’s disappearance. He tries to build a plot involving fairies, dwarfs, trolls keeping the powerful Aculos as a bait. The bait starts paying off when Holly Short (whose father Beechwood Short is accused of stealing the Aculos) falls for it. But can he save his father with the master plan he has designed?

The story is quite different with the mix of magic, fantasy and science. The use of the time curve as an equipment to freeze time is one among it. It can instill curiosity and people may go for the details. But the movie failed desperately to communicate the story with the audience. It was made in a hurry and that acted as the spoiler of the potion being prepared. It felt like the movie was built by joining many fragments separately without a plan and it was not fitting quite well among themselves.

The artist selection was also pathetic and could feel the artificiality in each and every one’s performance, even Colin Farrell and Judy Dench could not save it. The best part of the movie and that is worth appreciation is the CGA works and the location selection. Disney might have given a lot of focus on the visual part and failed to pay attention to the details of the character formation and screenplay. Now I feel like reading the book to get the feel on what the author was trying to communicate. I go with a rating of 2 out of 5 stars |(Ohh, can be discarded) for the movie.
